Since our earliest days in the industry Dental City has recognized the importance of giving back. From a 25 year strong partnership to support the needs of a local domestic shelter to annual donations to the DTA and supplies sent for mission trips around the world, service has been sewn into the fabric of our company culture.
However, in the last few years we’ve had an itch to do more. To not only donate funds and supplies but to go out in our community and work together to make a difference. So this year we kicked off a volunteering initiative that inspired our team to work with local organizations directly to help those in need around us.
This initiative led a group of nearly 50 members of our Dental City family to set aside some of their time to support the efforts of the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) organization. Eleven local churches hosted an FMSC Mobile Pack, which is a four-day event dedicated to making, packing and shipping hundreds of thousands of nutritious meals to children suffering from lack of food and proper nutrition all around the world. These mobile packs are designed to maximize the efforts of highly organized teamwork to ensure as many meals as possible can be sent to starving children.
In the two nights Dental City joined this event 189,432 meals were made—this is enough food to feed over 500 children for one year.
It was and is incredibly humbling to know that in only a few hours’ time we can make an indescribable difference in the lives of people who don’t share the same resources we have here. To see our employees working with members of the greater community to do good has left us feeling utterly inspired to continue finding ways to give back.
When we asked some team members how they felt about participating in the event and the work that is being done by FMSC it was clear they felt moved by the experience.
Angela, one of our account managers, used the experience to reflect back on her own life. “I try to live my life with gratitude for everything that I have, and this experience made me feel that on a whole different level. I think everyone knows there are children who are starving around the world, but it is hard to imagine just how much a simple meal affects their entire existence. How just a couple hours of your time changes a child’s life.”
And Kim, our product trainer, commended the event, saying “I was really impressed with the good work they’re doing. They definitely had a very effective way of making all that (meal packing) happen in a short period of time! I’d definitely do it again.”
And the overall consensus from all participants was that they would do it again in a heartbeat.
However, we know that there is still so much more than we—and all of us—can do to help those in our communities, country and around the world in need. We’re feeling inspired and invigorated in our desire to give back and we hope you are too. Whether it’s donating money, resources or time the smallest gesture can and will make a difference.
